Success Looks Different for Everyone, But Recognition Matters for All

Success Looks Different for Everyone, But Recognition Matters for All

Success looks different for everyone. For you, it might be stepping into a leadership role. For someone else, it could be having more time with family or feeling fulfilled in the work they do. You get to define what success means for you.

But there's one thing every single professional deserves: recognition for their hard work. And even better, recognition that comes with a promotion and a salary increase.

That kind of recognition reflects the hours, the effort, and the dedication you put into your work. Yet research shows this isn't the reality for most professionals. In North America, only 32% of employees strongly agree they receive fair recognition for their work, and a third report feeling invisible, undervalued, or unheard. Even more concerning, 66% say they'd leave a job if they didn't feel appreciated.

I've seen it happen again and again. Talented professionals doing excellent work but feeling like they're standing in the shadows. You work hard, you deliver, and still you're passed over for promotions or raises. Often it comes down to visibility and communication, as much as ability or effort.

Here are four steps you can use right now to lead your career into view.

Tell your story with intention. Don't just share what you did. Connect it to results: because of this, we achieved that. This makes your value visible.

Communicate every day. Communication isn't a one-off skill, it's something we practice daily. The way you update your manager, share progress in meetings, or follow up by email steadily builds your reputation over time. The way you communicate is just as important as the work itself. Don't feel discouraged if English is your second language or if you have an accent. Clarity beats perfection. Focus on the message you deliver. It's about clarity, intentionality, and making sure your words reflect the impact of your work. Strong communication means being understood, not sounding impressive.

Step into the conversation. Speak up, share wins, and contribute ideas. Staying silent keeps your work hidden, while participation makes you visible. Timing and substance count just as much as speaking up. The timing and substance of your message shape how others see you just as much as the act of speaking itself. So while silence can keep your contributions invisible, speaking without intention can dilute your impact. The goal is balance: be intentional, choose your moments, and deliver words that reinforce your reputation and influence.

Build your circle of notice. Mentors, peers, and advocates help amplify your contributions. Recognition spreads further when others highlight your impact. We work so hard, we get so busy, that we forget one of the most important parts of career growth: relationships. Relationships can be just as important, if not more important, than the actual work you deliver. Take a closer look at your time management and your daily priorities. Make sure you save time to build relationships, to connect genuinely with others, to learn about them, to be present, and to be human. Careers are built not only on output but also on connection.

Recognition is proof that your effort counts. It's what leads to promotions, salary growth, and influence. And it's what turns hard work into career progress.

That's exactly why I created Lead Your Career™. It's a small group program where driven professionals come together to focus on the most important aspects of career growth: gaining visibility, improving communication, demonstrating value, and negotiating salary increases. Alongside the group sessions, you'll also get two private 1:1 sessions with me, so you feel empowered, encouraged, and fully supported to win in your workplace.

Looking forward to where you take your professional story. Send me a note at racheldias@thedrivencareer.com, I'd love to hear your story.
