Promotion Season Is Coming. Why You're Still Overlooked at Work

Promotion Season Is Coming. Why You're Still Overlooked at Work

Every year, I see it happen. A professional works hard, takes on extra projects, pushes themselves to the point of burnout to meet deadlines, and gets a lot done. Then when performance reviews come around, they're not promoted or given a meaningful salary increase.

They walk away frustrated, wondering what else they could possibly do.

You might think about reporting it to HR or saying this isn't fair. But by that stage, it's too late. The decisions have already been made. Now you're left needing to prove yourself for another year.

A lot of it comes down to how you position yourself.

Over my 10+ years in HR, I've seen exactly how people get promoted and why others stay stuck. Sometimes leaving the company isn't the answer, because the same challenges will follow you until you learn to position yourself strategically. This isn't luck or personality, it's a skill you can learn.

Why hard work can go unnoticed

If your work isn't visible or clearly tied to business priorities, it can keep you off the promotion list, limit your salary increases, put you at risk during headcount cuts, and make your role more vulnerable in the age of AI and automation.

You should be working on this year round, but there's always still time to make progress before review season. Here are the three skills I recommend focusing on.

  • Visibility. Make sure your work is seen by the right people and tied to measurable results.
  • Assertive communication. Learn to talk about your value without feeling braggy, so your contributions are clear.
  • Growth mindset. Stay adaptable, seek feedback, and treat challenges as opportunities to strengthen your positioning.

The professionals who master these skills aren't just lucky. They've built a career strategy that works all year, not just at review time. That's why you often see them celebrating promotions even outside of review season.

As performance reviews approach, are you ready?

October and November reviews come around every year, which makes now the right time to prepare. This is exactly the work we do together inside Lead Your Career™, a small group coaching program with private 1:1 sessions built to help you show up strategically, get recognized for your value, and manage your career growth year round, instead of hoping for recognition and walking into review season unprepared.

If you deliver results but feel overlooked for raises or promotions, if you want to show up strategically this review season, or if you're ready to ask for more and back it up with clarity and strategy, that program is built for exactly this moment.

Lead Your Career. Stay Driven.
